Young people who work hard to build muscle already understand that exercise strengthens muscles and stimulates their growth. The heart is also a muscle—one that works tirelessly, pumping blood throughout the body every moment of our lives. Like other muscles, the heart becomes stronger and more efficient with regular exercise. A stronger heart pumps more blood with less effort, reducing strain on the cardiovascular system and helping to maintain overall health.

Effects of Exercise on the Heart

During exercise, the muscles in our arms, legs, chest, hips, and other parts of the body work harder than usual. This increased activity raises their demand for energy, which in turn increases their need for oxygen. To meet this demand, the heart pumps more blood to the working muscles, delivering the oxygen and nutrients they need.

In simple terms, when we make our skeletal muscles work harder, we also make the heart muscle work harder. This is how exercise trains the heart. During physical activity, the heart rate increases, and blood pressure rises temporarily, allowing more blood to circulate throughout the body. Over time, regular exercise strengthens the heart, making it more efficient so that it can pump more blood with less effort, both during activity and at rest.

Three Types of Exercise

Aerobic exercise, resistance training, and stretching are the three main types of exercise that contribute to overall fitness. Of these, aerobic exercise and resistance training have the most direct benefits for heart health. Stretching does not directly strengthen the heart or improve cardiovascular fitness, but it plays an important supporting role. By improving flexibility, mobility, and range of motion, stretching helps prepare the body for aerobic and resistance exercises, reduces the risk of injury, and makes it easier to stay physically active. In this way, stretching indirectly supports heart health by enabling regular exercise.

What Is Aerobic Exercise?

The word aerobic means “requiring oxygen.” Aerobic exercise, also known as cardiovascular exercise or cardio, involves continuous movement of large muscle groups, increasing the body’s demand for oxygen. To meet this increased demand, you breathe faster and deeper, allowing your lungs to take in more oxygen. At the same time, your heart beats faster and pumps more blood so that oxygen and nutrients can be delivered efficiently to working muscles.

Regular aerobic exercise strengthens the heart and lungs, improves circulation, and enhances the body’s ability to use oxygen efficiently. Walking, jogging, running, cycling, swimming, and dancing are all common examples of aerobic exercise.

Resistance Training

Resistance training can be performed using free weights such as dumbbells and barbells, resistance bands, weight machines, or even your own body weight. Exercises such as push-ups, squats, pull-ups, and chin-ups are all excellent examples of resistance training.

How Much?

Health experts recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week, ideally spread over 30 minutes a day on at least five days each week. In addition, resistance training is recommended on at least two non-consecutive days per week to allow muscles adequate time to recover.

Numerous studies have shown that combining aerobic exercise with resistance training provides greater health benefits than either type of exercise alone. Regular participation in both can improve cardiovascular fitness, help maintain a healthy weight, and improve blood lipid levels by increasing HDL (high-density lipoprotein), often called “good” cholesterol, while lowering LDL (low-density lipoprotein), commonly known as “bad” cholesterol.

1. Swimming

2. Walking

You can take a brisk walk in the morning, walk part of the way to work, or enjoy a longer walk on weekends. Even small amounts of regular walking can make a significant difference to your cardiovascular health.

3. Cycling

Cycling is another excellent aerobic exercise that engages the large muscles of the legs, making it highly beneficial for heart health. It raises the heart rate, improves blood circulation, and strengthens the cardiovascular system. The benefits of cycling are also supported by scientific research. In a 14-year study involving approximately 30,000 adults aged 20 to 93 in Denmark, researchers found that regular cycling was associated with better cardiovascular health and a lower risk of heart disease.

4. Weight training

Weight training is a form of resistance training that strengthens muscles by making them work against a weight or other forms of resistance. You can use equipment such as dumbbells, barbells, or resistance bands, but special equipment is not always necessary. Bodyweight exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups, chin-ups, squats, and planks are also highly effective and can easily be performed at home without any equipment.

5. Interval training

Alternating between periods of low- and high-intensity exercise is known as interval training. For example, you might run for one minute and then walk for three minutes and repeat the cycle several times. This pattern causes your heart rate to rise during the high-intensity intervals and recover during the lower-intensity periods. Over time, interval training can improve cardiovascular fitness, enhance the efficiency of the heart, and promote healthier blood vessels.

Precautions

If you have a pre-existing heart condition or other significant medical problems, consult your doctor before starting a new exercise program. Even if you are otherwise healthy, you should stop exercising immediately if you experience warning signs such as chest pain, shortness of breath that is unusual or severe, dizziness, or fainting during exercise.
